Dealing with trespassers can be a little tricky for security guards as they don’t have the powers to arrest, and trespassing isn’t classed as a criminal offence rather it is a civil offence
There are a few things to keep in mind when trespassing occurs
- confirm there has been a tresspass; make sure the individual have not taken permission to be on the premises before accusing them as this could reflect badly on your employer
- Trespassers who agree to leave should be escorted off the premises through the nearest exit point, explain the civil ramifications trespassing may have on them otherwise
- You will be supported by the police to evict trespassers adamant about trespassing from the premises. The law permits landlords to apply reasonable formed to remove someone from their property.
- Record keeping is crucial, make use of documents provided by your employers, keep an incident diary (log) recording events that may be of interest to the authorities
