As a security officer you will be required to write reports as a result of an incident.


A good report will include clear information of the incident, individuals involved in the incident, if any witnesses available and any actions that were taken. Essentially the report should cover the following

  • Who
  • What
  • When
  • Where
  • Why

This may even include diagrams or location plans if required.

In most cases, during your security duties, you will be armed with a notebook.

  • Security guards (citizens ) can only do so for an offences the perpetrator can be indicted for such as burglary and theft.
    The police have the power to arrest for any offence.
  • Arrest should never be done when it can cause danger or violence.
    Making arrest is one of the primary duties of a police officer, and are trained to do so in dangerous and violence circumstances.

When making an arrest;

  • Keep the suspect well informed of who you are and what you are doing and why you are arresting them.
  • If you think a suspect may resist arrest, consider your safety first and always make sure you’re able to defend your actions in a court of law
  • A lawful arrest required the suspect to be transported to the police or magistrates court. You must ensure the comfort and welfare of the suspect while they are in your custody.

Consider the three ‘W’s
WHEN:
A crime should be reported as soon as it comes to your attention. It is important to be clear on what is an emergency crime involving danger to life or property to report in which case you should call 999 (in the UK) all other incidents should be reported to the 101 police number.
WHO:


Consider the crime in terms of priorities for the relevant authorities, non emergencies should be reported to your supervisor who will address the visitor or customer and decide on contacting the police or not. When life or property is under threat or danger, always call 999.
WHAT:
There are key facts to have to hand when reporting – where the crime has taken place, what sort of crime it is and the time it took place. Depending on the course of events, more information will be required of you as an on-duty security guard.

As a security guard, you may be required to search bodies or vehicles. One key thing to remember is thatsecurity-search you have no powers and can only do this with permission.
There are certain per-requisites for a search;
1. Is the person ( employee, visitor) aware they will be searched? In certain premises a body and property search is a requirement for entry.

2.Are you permitted to make a search? Be sure if this is part of your responsibility as stated in your assignments instructions.

3. It is important to secure the consent of the person being searched before it happens. If you do not get permission you can prevent entry on ti the premises.

There are differ types of searches;

Routine; this is a basic approach usually clearly stated in assignment instructions and can be performed on a daily basis.

Intelligence- based; these are conducted on the discovery or revelation of information on a specific issue.

People; certain premises require for visitors and staff to be searched before entry or at random.

Bags; just as a person may be searched so also can their bag, this is usually done at the same time.

Vehicle; this may be conducted as well as a person and bag search.

How to do a search

It is important to carry out a search professionally and effectively bearing in mind that searches are intrusive and considering you don’t have the powers to force a search, it is worth doing so mindful of the permission you’ve been given to do so.

  • During every search you are representing your employer
  • Always ask permission before searching
  • Show empathy and respect at all times during a search, some people have mobility issues, support them and others may be uncomfortable with the search, bear this in mind
  • Keep in control of the process, prevent interference and do not allow others to observe your actions or mislead them

Maintaining levels of professionalism when searching;

  • You can allow individuals to assist in the search by revealing their contents of their pockets and bags
  • Same sex searching should be practised where possible, in consideration for those who may be embarrassed by the search
  • The presence of another member of your security team will go a long way to to serve as a witness in the event that a member of the public may accuse of inappropriate activity
  • Ensure the right environments are available for searches, in some circumstances, some may need to take clothing off like religious grabs.

When a discovery is made during a search

  • Contact management

Regular patrols is one the main duties of a security guard. These patrols can be carried either on foot, in a vehicle or via CCTV cameras.

In the security industry, there are four kinds of patrols;
(1) Unlock or takeover patrol

Unlock or takeover patrol


This is the process of opening a business premises or a store at the start of the day. This may involve the opening of entry points to allow members of staff entry in preparation for the business day. There may also be cases when a guard is taking over from a night duty shift.

Routine patrol

Routine patrols is a key duty of most security officers, this involves patrolling designated area of responsibility to ensure there is a high level of security coverage. This is done prevent or detect any criminal activities.

High risk area patrol

Some security patrols can carry a particular high risk of criminal or unauthorised activities.
It includes the same duties as a routine patrol, but at increased levels.

Lockup or handover patrol

This type patrol involves securing the site after the day’s business has concluded, making sure the premises are cleared of staff and alarm system are initiated. Depending on the type of business it may also involve handing over responsibility to the night duty officers.
